In the summer of 2004 the Minister of Energy, Bjarni Djurholm, appointed a work group to formulate an energy policy for the Faroe Islands. The work group was also asked to write a Bill on Electricity.

The purpose of the project is to prepare an overall energy policy and a bill on electricity. Importance is attached to future energy developments being carried out in an environmental friendly manner and that the use of sustainable energy recources is encouraged.



At the same time a hearing group was appointed to act as a consulting body to the working group. The hearing group consists of representatives from the electricity company, environmental groups, the municipalities, which are the owner of the electricity company, the petroelum importing companies, the employers' association etc.


The work group shall submit a report on energy policy to the minister covering

• Draft overall energy policy for the Faroe Islands
• Draft bill on electricity

In addition the work group shall at regular interval produce interrim reports on the progress of the work.

It is important that the energy situation in the Faroe Island is explained also compared to the other Nordic countries. Issues of particular importance are:
• Future energy demand
• Security of supply
• Sustainable energy resources
• Competition
• Environmental issues
• Economic consequences
